After breakfast, we will depart for a half day tour to the Romanian city Timisoara (163 kil), the capital city of Timiș County, and the

timisoara-victory-square-night-romania-balkan-europe-cel-tours

main social, economic and cultural centre in western Romania. One of the largest Romanian cities (the third most populous city in the country) with a population of 319,279 inhabitants. Timisoara is considered the informal capital city of the historical region of Banat. In September 2016, Timisoara was selected as the European Capital of Culture for 2021. Upon our arrival we will have a short stop for coffee or refreshment in one of the welcoming terraces in the city center. We continue with a relaxed walking tour in the city center. History, beautiful buildings, the stories of the city and their people. The tour takes place inside of the old city walls of the Vauban type fortress, built in the 18th century by the Austro-Hungarians. The starting point is the oldest building in the city – the castle built by the Hungarian king Carol Robert of Anjou, at the begging of the 14th century. Our tour follows an 800 years history on a track of about 2,5 km. Afterwards we continue to Poiana Brasov (435 kil) where we will spend the night near Bran. Check in and overnight at the hotel.

DAY 4 CASTLE DRACULA
After breakfast, we will depart for a half day tour to Castle Dracula. Bran Castle situated near Bran and in the immediate vicinity of Braşov, is a national monument and landmark in Romania.

brasov-transylvania-castle-dracula-bran-romania-balkan-europe-cel-tours

The fortress is situated on the border between Transylvania and Wallachia. Commonly known as “Dracula’s Castle, it is the home of the title character in Bram Stoker’s Dracula. The castle is now a museum open to tourists, displaying art and furniture collected by Queen Marie. At the bottom of the hill is a small open-air museum park exhibiting traditional Romanian peasant structures from across the country. Nature has been generous with this area because it is surrounded by the impressive silhouettes of the massifs Bucegi and Piatra Craiului, two of the most important elements in the Romanian mountainous touristic scenery. The landscape from this area is a harmonious mixture of different landforms (high mountains, plateaus, the curvy shapes carved by the rivers along their banks and the valleys that cross the land, shaped by the rich hydrographic network). Afterwards we depart for Bucharest (173 Kil). Arrival, check in and overnight at the hotel.

DAY 5 BUCHAREST
After breakfast we are heading for a city tour of Bucharest.

bucharest-city-sky-above-town-romania-balkans-europe-cel-tours

Bucharest is the capital and largest city of Romania, as well as its cultural, industrial, and financial centre. It is located in the southeast of the country, on the banks of the Dâmbovița River, less than 60 km (37.3 mi) north of the Danube River and the Bulgarian border. Bucharest was first mentioned in documents in 1459. It became the capital of Romania in 1862 and is the centre of Romanian media, culture, and art. Its architecture is a mix of historical (neo-classical),interbellum (Bauhaus and art deco), communist-era and modern. In the period between the two World Wars, the city’s elegant architecture and the sophistication of its elite earned Bucharest the nickname of “Little Paris” (Micul Paris). Although buildings and districts in the historic city centre were heavily damaged or destroyed by war, earthquakes, and above all Nicolae Ceaușescu’s program of systematization, many survived. In recent years, the city has been experiencing an economic and cultural boom.In 2016, the historical city centre was listed as “endangered” by the World Monuments Watch. Rest of day at leisure. Overnight at the hotel.

DAY 6 BUCHAREST – SOFIA (360 Km)
After our breakfast, we will depart to Sofia, the capital and largest city of Bulgaria. Sofia is one of the oldest cities on the Balkans found by the Thracian tribe Serdi. In 29 A.D. Sofia became the capital of the Roman province of Inner Dacia. Through the ages, the city played role as an important trading center in the Byzantine and Bulgarian Empires. Under Ottoman rule, Sofia was the center of Rumelia province. Sofia became the capital of restored Bulgaria in 1879, with a population of only about 12,000. Today many streets, buildings, parks, and even whole neighborhoods preserve the architectural style from the turn of the century. The city has a population of 1.26 million, while over 1.5 million people live in its functional urban area. It is the largest South Slavic city in the world, being slightly more populous than Belgrade. The city is located at the foot of Vitosha Mountain in the western part of the country, within less than 50 kilometres (31 mi) drive from the Serbian border. Its location in the centre of the Balkan peninsula means that it is the midway between the Black Sea and theAdriatic Sea, whereas the Aegean Sea is the closest to it. Sofia has been an area of human habitation since at least 7000 BC. Being Bulgaria’s primate city, it is a hometown of many of the major local universities, cultural institutions and commercial companies. Arrival, check in and overnight at the hotel.

DAY 7 SOFIA CITY TOUR
After our breakfast, we proceed to the Sofia city tour. The day starts with a short transfer to the National History Museum, occupying the residency of the former communist ruler Todor Zhivkov, located at the outskirts of Sofia.

sofia-city-church-bulgaria-balkans-europe-cel-tours

The afternoon will be for gentle walking tour of the center, where you will learn about the National Library, Sofia University, The Parliament, The St. Alexander Nevsky Patriarchal Cathedral, the National Theatre, St. Sofia Church, Sofia’s oldest building – St George Rotunda, The houses of the Council of Ministers, presidency and the former communist party headquarters, the ruins of the ancient city of Serdika (dating from the 5th-6th C), the National Palace of Culture, the main shopping streets of Sofia etc. Rest of say at leisure. thessaloniki-white-tower-panorama-night-macedonia-greece-cel-tours

After our breakfast we will be departing for Thessaloniki Greece, a lively modern city overlooking the Gulf of Thermaikos, is the capital of Macedonia and second largest city of Greece. The White Tower (in Greek Lefkos Pyrgos), which dominates the seafront promenade and is one of the last remainders of the 15th century fortifications, has become Thessaloniki’s unofficial emblem. In 1997 the city was the Cultural Capital of Europe. It was also an Olympic city during the 2004 Olympic Games in Greece. Thessaloniki was founded in 315 B.C. by Kassandros, king of Macedonia and former general of Alexander the Great. During the Byzantine era Thessaloniki was the second most significant city of the Byzantine Empire, after the capital Constantinople. The wealth of the 14th century Byzantine churches testifies to the heights to which Christianity then attained in the city (St. Paul preached here and also addressed the Thessalonians’ in his well known epistle). This panoramic tour of Thessaloniki includes the Galerian complex- Rotonda triumphal arch, via Egnatia with the medieval churches the holocaust monument and the port of Thessaloniki and the symbol of the city the white tower, we will do 3 stop overs in the city walls and the trig onion tower with the panorama of the city, the basili
ca of St. Demetrius from the 5th century A.D. After our tour we depart to Kalambaka, a town and a municipality in the Trikala regional unit, part of Thessaly in Greece and the nearest town to Meteora. Arrival, check in, dinner and overnight at the hotel

DAY 9 METEORA MONASTERIES TOUR – ATHENS (352 km)

meteora-kalabaka-monasteries-mountain-thessaly-rocks-greece-europe-cel-tours-02

The Metéora, literally “middle of the sky”, “suspended in the air” or “in the heavens above” – is a formation of immense monolithic pillars and hills like huge rounded boulders which dominate the local area. It is also associated with one of the largest and most precipitously built complexes of Eastern Orthodox monasteries in Greece, second in importance only to Mount Athos. The monasteries are built on natural conglomerate pillars, at the northwestern edge of the Plain of Thessaly near the Pineios river and Pindus Mountains, in central Greece. As early as the 11th century, monks occupied the caverns of Meteora. However, monasteries were not built until the 14th century, when the monks sought somewhere to hide in the face of an increasing number of Turkish attacks on Greece. At this time, access to the top was via removable ladders or windlass. Nowadays, getting up is a lot simpler due to steps being carved into the rock during the 1920’s. Of the 24 monasteries, only 6 (five male, one female) are still functioning, with each housing less than 10 individuals. Metéora is included on the UNESCO World Heritage List under criteria I, II, IV, V and VII.

We continue our road to Athens. Arrival late in the afternoon, check in to the hotel and overnight.

DAY 10 ATHENS CITY TOUR
After breakfast we will proceed to the Half Day Athens city tour.

athens-hellenic-parliament-syntagma-soldiers-evzones-attica-greece-cel-tours

Arrive in Acropolis museum and visit the place where at last the statues found their home and admire the wonders of the classical era. We continue to Parthenon

After our guided tour we will continue with our escort to a walking tour of Athens city center.

Thessaloniki

If you’re going to splurge anywhere in Northern Greece, Thessaloniki (thess-ah-lo-nee-kih) is the place to do it. Greece’s second city, and its cultural capital, Thessaloniki (also called Salonica) lets you indulge in fine food, sinful sweets, ultra-chic shopping, an energetic nightlife and more concerts, parties, art shows and events than you can keep track of.

Meteora – Kalambaka

Meteora (meh-teh-o-rah) is an extraordinary place, and one of the most visited in all of Greece. The massive pinnacles of smooth rock are ancient and yet could be the setting for a futuristic science fiction tale. The monasteries atop them add to this strange and beautiful landscape. Each monastery is built around a central courtyard

Hello Mary,
First of all. id like to thank you(primarily), Elena, Dimitris & Illyas for making our tour enjoyable. We really had a good time and would communicate the same to many people. You can identify us from the photographs above I am a regular reviewer on trip advisor and you wanted the references which I have pasted below. You need to press CRTL+click Im very sure many well to do Indians would like to visit Greece but tour operators avoid(preferring UK/Italy/Germany/France(very good embassy procedure) due to the slow procedure.I know you said that they cannot hire additional staff for 2 ½ months but they know the period April-June, which is regular .Others hire temporary staff to cope. This is like your July-August holidays in Greece
My son saw that you have got an award from the Kashmir Govt and China also. Many congratulations!
Hope to be back sometime to see Crete & Delhi

Your day sounds almost exactly like the tour that Randy and I did of the Peloponnese, right down to lunch. I actually thought the lunch was really good the wine was great (first time I had ever had sweet, chilled red wine), and our dessert was the best oranges I’d ever had.
We actually stole the leftover oranges to eat on the plane on the way home. I loved basically everything we did in Greece and Turkey, but my favorite day by far was the day we spent on the island of Rhodes. Our (many) photos from our trip are here: if you want to look. I’m glad you had such a fantastic trip!
